Itinerary Details

Guided Hike at Deception Pass

With your naturalist guide in the lead, hike along the beach and wind through towering stands of douglas fir trees mixed with red bark madrones.  Each time you arrive at a clearing, panoramic views of the sea cliffs and swirling tidal eddies greet you.  Your guide will help you find wildlife along the way and share stories about the region’s early explorers.

As the trail winds along the fringe of the forest, you’ll gain a little elevation and look out over the expanse of the Salish Sea, the San Juan Islands clustered on the horizon.  Continuing back through the forest, we’ll make our way back to the beach where we started.  At low tide, we’ll walk along the beach, sharing the space with blue heron, cormorants and the occasional passing kayaker.

Explore the Seaside town of La Conner

Energized from the morning hike, choose to head into the seaside town of La Conner or have us arrange a delicious picnic lunch by the beach.  La Conner, is situated along a pleasant waterfront with many cafes nestled in among its 19th century buildings.  If you opt for the picnic lunch, choose from several different entrees when you make your booking.  Our lunches include a fresh green salad and dessert.  We’ll also pack plenty of still and sparkling water, along with hot and cold beverages.

Local Wine & Food Tasting

After lunch, we’ll take you to taste a few delicious morsels crafted in the nearby Skagit Valley.  We’ll visit a local cheese maker and try some of their best cheeses.  In season, choose to graze on organic blueberries at a local farm.  Last, we’ll finish up our tasting session with a visit to one of the area’s scenic wineries where adults will enjoy a wine tasting flight.  If the group would like, we can even squeeze in a visit to one of Washington’s premiere shellfish farms where you’ll learn to shuck oysters by the sea.

After this exciting full-day tour, your guide will drop you off at any of the following: back to your Seattle hotel, Sea-Tac airport, or the cruise terminal.  If you need to head somewhere else outside of Seattle, just let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hotels do you pick up from?

We pick up from all hotels, AirBnB’s, and vacation rentals in downtown Seattle and on the East Side in the Bellevue area.  Once you make a booking, we will contact you to confirm your specific pick-up time location.

What is this tour’s departure time?

Our standard tour departure time is 9:00am.  As this is a private tour, we can adjust this time as necessary to accommodate your group.

We’ll be on a cruise ship at Pier 66 or Pier 91.  Do you pick up private groups from the cruise terminals?

Yes, that’s no problem!  We pick up groups from the cruise terminals all the time and it’s very easy to accommodate.  Once you make a booking, we’ll discuss your group’s logistics with you.

Can you drop us off at Sea-Tac Airport or a cruise ship after the tour?

Yes, that’s no problem. If you’re just getting off a cruise ship and need a transfer to the airport or to a Seattle hotel, we’d be happy to drop you off where you need to go at no extra charge.

My group is staying in Bellevue or somewhere else on the East Side, can you pick us up here?

Yes, that’s no problem!  When making a booking, be sure to let us know where your group would like to be picked up and we’ll discuss your group’s customized schedule.

Someone in my group has an allergy / is a vegan / a vegetarian; will you have lunch for that person?

Yes, we will happily accommodate dietary requirements with a personalized meal selection.  In order for us to arrange this for you, however, please notify us of your request no less than 72 hours before your tour.  If there is less than 72 hours before the tour, we will do our best to accommodate you, but if we can’t, we will let you know at the time of booking.

What will the weather be like?

Weather along the coast changes very quickly and is variable throughout the year.  If the sun is out and we are walking, it can quickly get warm and a t-shirt is comfortable.  If the sun goes behind a cloud and the wind picks up, it can get very chilly.  Winter (November-March) may be in the high 30s to high 40s.  Spring (April-June) and Fall (September-October) temperatures are often in the 50s-60s but can be as high as the 70s or as low as the 40s on certain days.  Summer temperatures (July-August) are generally warm in the 70s-80s, but daily temperature fluctuation is common with early mornings in the 50s and late afternoons warming up to the high 70s to low 80s during a heat wave.  If we are expecting unseasonably warm or cool temperatures, we will reach out to you via phone or e-mail about two days prior to your tour.  While the area we’ll travel in receives substantially less annual rainfall than Seattle, it may rain any time of year.  April through September is the driest time of year.

What should I wear?

At a minimum, we recommend preparing 3 layers:

  • a quick drying t-shirt
  • an insulating layer (wool sweater, hoodie, etc.)
  • a waterproof layer (wind breaker, soft shell jacket to keep wind and moisture away from your skin)

Guests on winter, early and late season tours (between November and May) are advised to bring an additional insulating layer.  During cooler weather, a generally good rule of thumb is to bring one more layer than you think is necessary.

What shoes are appropriate?

While we won’t be doing any intense hikes, please wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in over uneven ground and provide ankle support.  Many people find that sneakers are adequate, but a sturdy sole with good traction is essential.

How much walking will we do?

This tour includes a 2-hour easy to moderate hike around a portion of Deception Pass State Park.  The total length of the hike is about 2-3 miles and is taken at a very leisurely pace.  The hike is suitable for people of all ages and follows a rolling trail along the beach and through old growth forests.  If anyone in your group has mobility issues and you’d like to scale back the hike, that’s no problem.  There are many beautiful areas of the state park we can drive to and take in the scenery that do not require a hike.

Will we see any wildlife?

Wildlife is, by definition, “wild,” and is on its own schedule beyond our control.  That said, most of our wildlife sightings are marine mammals and marine birds.  Marine mammals we commonly spot are seals and otters.  Bald eagles, blue heron, cormorants, and other coastal bird species are also common.

What if I have another question?

No problem! Just contact us or give us a call at 888-365-9488 and we’d be happy to chat.

Two great tours with Michael!

Angie802, May 17, 2019

I worked with Michael to set up two days of private tours for my family while in Seattle. Our first tour was a 1/2 day Seattle highlights city tour where we went to Queen Anne Hill, Gasworks Park, and the Locks for breathtaking views of the City. Then off to Snoqualmie Falls for some scenic views of the waterfall, lunch at Salish Lodge, and a beautiful scenic hike after lunch with more waterfalls and beautiful scenery. Was truly amazing!!

Our second day tour started off with a hike at Deception Pass State Park – again breathtaking scenery, then off to Anacortes to catch a Whale Watching excursion in the San Juan Islands where we saw a gray whale, harbor seals, a bald eagle and lastly the best…….Orca whales! It was an awesome experience. Michael was very friendly, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. My family would definitely recommend Nature Nuts and Michael to anyone seeking a personal and unique trip! Thanks Michael!!!

I was on a big family trip (14 people) this past August 2018. We had two days to spend in Seattle, one day before and one day after our cruise. Our tour guide was Michael, and both days were absolutely incredible!! Our first day, we went to Bow Hill Farm, which had beautiful sunflower fields and delicious blueberries for picking. Then, we went to a cheese farm and had even more amazing food. Michael then suggested a place called the Bread Farm, which was another great stop. Everyone had an amazing time, Michael was an outstanding tour guide, and it was definitely a highlight of our trip. Some of our other stops included: La Conner and Deception Pass State Park. On our second tour with Michael, we explored the metropolitan area of Seattle. We got to see: the Space Needle, the Chihuly Glass Museum, Pike’s Market Place, and Snoqualmie Falls. My entire family had an unforgettable experience that would not have been possible without Nature Nuts or Michael!! Thank you!

Excellent Tour, Excellent Guide

We visited Deception Pass with lunch at La Conner weaved in. The area is great and Deception Pass is breathtaking. Our tour guide, Mike, was very knowledgeable and flexible.

Wonderful experience with a well versed guide!

Recommended to me by my friend, this is for sure one of the best experiences to try out if in town if you are here at this time of the year.

I strongly recommend Nature Nuts as the they provide several edges as compared to other offerings:

  1. They pick and drop you from the hotel of your choice, no need to check for Uber or local transit to arrive at pick-up points.
  2. The complimentary wine and cheese tasting is great as it’s laid out in an open patio and well arranged during the tour.
  3. The guide is extremely courteous, super helpful and has a vast amount of knowledge of the locality, flora and fauna! He gave me clear instructions for the pick-up and was at my hotel bang on time! His knowledge about the details and oratory skills were quite engrossing. As a group we decided to go ahead with Deception Pass and it was the best choice. He showed us both the sides of the bridge along with some wildlife and good spots for photography. 🙂 Also, he told us a lot about the geographies and the local food preparation of the area.
